Job Description

The Lead Piping Engineer provides technical leadership and supervision for piping engineering activities on medium to large-scale projects. This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and reviewing piping design and engineering work to ensure compliance with project requirements, applicable codes and standards, client specifications, and Fluor procedures. The Lead Piping Engineer serves as a technical authority within the project team and supports safe, cost-effective, and quality-driven project execution throughout all phases of the project lifecycle.
  • Lead the piping engineering discipline for assigned projects from conceptual design through detailed engineering, construction, commissioning, and project closeout.
  • Develop and implement piping engineering execution plans, schedules, budgets, and resource requirements.
  • Manage and coordinate the activities of piping engineers, designers, and support personnel.
  • Review and approve piping deliverables including:
  • Piping material specifications
  • Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Plot plans
  • Equipment layouts
  • Stress analysis reports
  • Isometric drawings
  • Material requisitions
  • Ensure engineering deliverables comply with project requirements, client specifications, international codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate interfaces with other engineering disciplines including process, mechanical, civil/structural, electrical, instrumentation, and construction teams.
  • Lead technical reviews, design reviews, HAZOP support activities, and client meetings.
  • Resolve complex technical issues and provide guidance on piping system design, material selection, flexibility analysis, and constructability.
  • Support procurement activities including technical bid evaluations, vendor document reviews, and supplier coordination.
  • Monitor engineering progress, identify risks, and develop mitigation strategies to maintain project objectives.
  • Ensure adherence to Fluor's Quality Management System and Safety, Health, and Environmental (HSE) requirements.
  • Provide mentoring, coaching, and technical development support to junior and intermediate engineers.
  • Participate in proposal development, scope definition, estimating, and business development activities when required.

Basic Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum 12-15 years of piping engineering experience within the metal and mining industry.
  • Demonstrated experience leading piping engineering teams on EPC, EPCM, or detailed engineering projects.
  • Strong understanding of piping design principles, piping materials, and plant layout development.
  • Experience with piping stress analysis and flexibility assessments.
  • Knowledge of engineering software and design systems used for piping design and model review.
  • Ability to manage discipline budgets, schedules, and project execution requirements.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary and multicultural project environments.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, and project delivery excellence.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE), Chartered Engineer (CEng), or equivalent professional registration.
  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Experience serving as Lead Piping Engineer on large international EPC/EPCM projects.
  • Advanced knowledge of 3D design and plant modeling platforms such as SmartPlant 3D (SP3D), AVEVA E3D, PDMS, or similar systems.
  • Experience with Caesar II or equivalent piping stress analysis software.
  • Familiarity with digital engineering and model-based project execution methodologies.
  • Experience in modularization, constructability reviews, and brownfield project execution.
  • Strong client-facing experience with the ability to present technical solutions and project status updates to senior stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to mentor engineering teams and contribute to organizational capability development.
  • Knowledge of sustainability, energy transition, and carbon reduction project requirements is advantageous.
