Job Description

This position performs work requiring advanced, predominantly intellectual knowledge and the exercise of professional judgment. The role applies specialized engineering expertise to deliver fire protection and fire suppression design services that support Fluor’s competitiveness in the global marketplace. The position supports the Area Lead or Discipline Lead and applies standard engineering techniques to moderately complex assignments.

Principal Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Act as a fire protection and fire suppression systems designer for industrial facilities.
  • Design fire suppression systems in compliance with NFPA standards, National Building Code of Canada, FM Global Data Sheets, local AHJ requirements, and client standards.
  • Develop fire protection and suppression designs using Revit, SmartPlant 3D, AutoCAD, and other CAD/BIM tools.
  • Prepare system layouts, schematics, plans, sections, details, and installation drawings.
  • Perform hydraulic calculations and system sizing for water‑based fire suppression systems.
  • Design and specify sprinkler systems (wet, dry, pre‑action, deluge), wet and dry standpipe systems, and special hazard systems including clean agent, gaseous, and dry chemical systems.
  • Select appropriate fire suppression methods, equipment, and materials based on hazard classification, building use, and applicable codes.
  • Interpret and coordinate designs with architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, and fire alarm disciplines.
  • Integrate fire protection designs within a BIM environment to ensure coordination and constructability.
  • Prepare design documentation, technical specifications, material lists, and vendor submittals.
  • Respond to AHJ, client, and internal review comments.
  • Participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, constructability reviews, and interdisciplinary coordination meetings.
  • Support procurement, RFIs, construction, commissioning, and site activities, including site visits and meetings.
  • Perform fire protection assessments and prepare clear technical reports.
  • Conduct QA/QC reviews of own work and peer deliverables.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior staff.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation in Fluor systems and ensure compliance with quality and safety requirements.

Basic Job Requirements

  • Accredited four (4) year degree or global equivalent in applicable field of study and four (4) years* of work-related experience or a combination of education and directly related experience equal to eight (8) years* if non-degreed; some locations may have additional or different qualifications in order to comply with local requirements
  • Demonstrated experience with sprinkler and special hazard suppression systems.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA and FM Global standards.
  • Proficiency with design and calculation tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, Smartplant 3D, hydraulic calculation software).
  • Ability to communicate effectively with audiences that include but are not limited to management, coworkers, clients, vendors, contractors, and visitors
  • Job related technical knowledge necessary to complete the job
  • Ability to learn and apply knowledge of applicable local, state/province, and federal/national statutes and guidelines
  • Ability to attend to detail and work in a time-conscious and time-effective manner
  • Advanced knowledge of discipline codes and standards, commercial availability and cost of materials
  • Practical field experience
  • Intermediate computer and software skills to include the use of word processing, e-mail, spreadsheet and electronic presentation programs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience on industrial, mining, oil & gas, or large infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with EPC or EPCM project execution.
  • NICET certification (or equivalent) is an asset.
  • Experience coordinating with AHJs and responding to regulatory comments.
  • Strong understanding of constructability and installation practices.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced project environment.

Compressed work schedule: The Fluor Canada offices work a compressed work schedule offering every second Friday off. 

Salary is based upon experience. Salary Range: $80,500.00 - $150,500.00

The market rate for the role is typically at the mid-point of the salary range; however, variations in final salary are determined by additional factors such as the candidate’s qualifications, relevant years of experience, geographic location, internal pay equity, and prevailing market conditions for the specific role.
