As a Lead Mechanical Engineer within Fluor’s Mining & Metals business line, you will drive engineering excellence, guide multidisciplinary teams, and ensure high‑quality mechanical design solutions that meet project, regulatory, and client requirements.

Purpose of the Role

The Lead Mechanical Engineer is responsible for providing technical leadership, strategic direction, and oversight for all mechanical engineering activities within mining projects. The role ensures alignment with project objectives, industry best practices, regulatory frameworks, and Fluor’s execution standards while supporting seamless cross‑disciplinary integration and high‑quality project delivery.

 

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Technical Management

  • Provide strategic direction and oversight for mechanical engineering activities across mining projects, ensuring alignment with project objectives and relevant standards.
  • Lead and coordinate a multidisciplinary team of mechanical and mining-related engineers to deliver high‑quality designs, plans, and technical solutions.
  • Oversee the development of mechanical engineering deliverables, ensuring technical accuracy, constructability, and compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.

Cross‑Functional Integration

  • Direct and manage interfaces between Mechanical Engineering and key project disciplines, including Process Engineering, Project Controls, Project Management, Procurement & Contracts, Construction, and client representatives.
  • Ensure effective communication, timely coordination, and resolution of cross‑disciplinary issues to support integrated and predictable project execution.

Cost‑Competitive Execution

  • Champion the application of Cost Competitive Execution (CCE) techniques to optimise engineering processes and deliver the most cost‑effective overall project solution.
  • Drive value‑engineering initiatives to support project efficiency, constructability, operability, and long‑term lifecycle value.
  • Promote continuous improvement and innovative solutions within mechanical engineering.

Project Delivery, Compliance & Quality Assurance

  • Monitor mechanical engineering performance against baseline budgets for man‑hours and materials.
  • Implement effective change‑management practices and provide accurate, timely reporting of variances and progress.
  • Maintain proactive communication with Engineering Department Managers regarding design issues, risks, and resource needs.
  • Ensure all mechanical engineering deliverables meet project specifications, quality standards, and statutory or regulatory requirements.

Basic Job Requirements

  • Accredited four (4)‑year degree or global equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field.
  • Minimum of twelve (12) years of relevant work experience in mechanical engineering within mining, heavy industrial, or process plant environments.
  • Recognised professional certification or registration in the applicable field (as required by location).
  • Strong communication skills and ability to engage effectively with management, colleagues, clients, contractors, and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to interpret and apply applicable local, regional, and national engineering codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work efficiently in time‑sensitive environments.

Other Job Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience in process plants and materials handling systems (e.g., conveyors, crushers, mills, pumps).
  • Experience with effort‑hour estimating, work planning, and staffing forecasts.
  • Proven leadership and team‑building capabilities, with the ability to influence and drive cross‑functional collaboration.
  • Experience in project setup, development of control‑level schedules, progress reporting, and project close‑out.
  • High resilience, adaptability, and ability to perform effectively under pressure.
  • Strong commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
